Benchmark
A tool to compare the speed of multiple entities. Benchmarks exist for
hardware, software and services.
BIOS
Short for "Basic Input Output System". Responsible for initializing your
computer so that your operating system can load.
Bit
Short for binary digit, the smallest unit of information on a machine.
The term was first used in 1946 by John Tukey. A single bit can hold
only one of two values: 0 or 1. More meaningful information is obtained
by combining consecutive bits into larger units. For example, a byte is
composed of 8 consecutive bits.
Byte
The smallest addressable data storage unit. A byte consists of 8 bits.
Since a bit can be in one of two states a byte can store one of (2 to the
power of 8) combinations.
Cache
A memory cache, sometimes called a cache store or RAM cache, is a
portion of memory made of high-speed static RAM (SRAM) instead of
the slower and cheaper dynamic RAM (DRAM) used for main memory.
Memory caching is effective because most programs access the same
data or instructions over and over. By keeping as much of this
information as possible in SRAM, the computer avoids accessing the
slower DRAM.
